Emmys Fashion: Color Inspiration for Fall and Beyond

There is a strong relationship between the worlds of fashion and interior design. The parade of outfits at the Emmys can certainly serve as an inspiration for color palettes. Here are some of my favorites from the red carpet:

red interiors

Sofia Vergara always takes bombshell to the next level. Her Vera Wang gown is the perfect shade of red. Red can make for a dramatic accent wall or a shade to incorporate in the form of accessories.

To update your space for autumn, consider swapping out summery elements and replacing them with accents in a color like this burgundy Vera Wang dress. We always love dark and chic.

Carrie Underwood Emmys

Carrie Underwood’s Romona Keveza gown brings to mind formally draped Dupioni silk window treatments. Would she take that as a compliment? The deep purple is a bold way to welcome fall.

Girls actress Allison Williams wore a simple, royal blue Ralph Lauren gown.  Jewel tones warm up a space. I could see this color on walls or upholstery.

Sarah Hyland Emerald Green dress

Sarah Hyland was the epitome of sophistication in CH by Carolina Herrera. This is another excellent example of a rich jewel tone. Plus, emerald green was named the 2013 Color of the Year by Pantone.

Neutral paint

Mikaela Hoover gave other fashionable celebrities a run for their money in an elegant, lacy, cream gown. Neutrals, such as white, cream, champagne, beige, and nudes were all over the red carpet. Neutral tones are always a classic backdrop. Similar to Emmys fashion, a lot of my clients have been opting for neutral paint colors, even white. I then add color through fabric and art.

Here are a few ideas for translating these fashion trends into your design:

SW 6871 Positive Red

Sherwin Williams Positive Red (SW 6871) exudes confidence. Use this fearless paint color on an accent wall or paint an entire room and complement it with more sedate hues.

Take a cue from the deep, warm tones with the Safavieh Mystic Storage Ottoman available at the Iris Interiors Shop.

Benjamin Moore Paddington Blue

Benjamin Moore Paddington Blue gives walls a vivid, yet romantic wash of color.

Love this jewel-toned overdyed wool rug from ABC Carpet & Home.

How chic is this purple velvet Chesterfield sofa? It’s available at CoCoCo.

Starlets looked anything but boring in nude, beige, and white gowns. Dress up a neutral wall color with textiles and accessories in autumnal shades.

Which celebrities stunned you with their Emmys Awards’ fashions? Will you use the red carpet for your interior design inspiration?

Emmy Awards’ Fashion: Hits and Misses

Fashion and interior design have always been close relatives. The runways often set the tone for what’s hot in the design world, particularly when it comes to color. Then again, prints from interiors find their way to clothing. The fields borrow from each other to create all things beautiful whether they are adorning our feet or our foyer.

The Emmy’s served as a showcase for red carpet trends, some of which give me a dose of inspiration for decorating schemes. Take a peek at a few of the looks that I thought were hot and those that I definitely thought were not.

Julie Bowen Emmy's Dress

I loved Modern Family actress Julie Bowen’s Monique Lhuillier dress, especially the color. The strapless, floor length gown was absolutely stunning.

Claire Danes Yellow Dress

Homeland star Claire Danes’ yellow Lanvin dress was reminiscent of a sack. Not enough glamour for my taste. However, she does get a bit of break considering she’s pregnant.

Zooey Deschanel, the star of New Girl, wore a frothy dress custom-made by Reem Acra. It suits her quirky personality and is at once sexy and sweet. Plus, the beautiful light blue color matches her eyes.

Glenn Close Emmy Gown

Photo via Extra.

Damages’ Glenn Close wore a long sleeved, Bibhu Mohapatra mermaid gown, which Radar called “matronly meets bondage.” The busy black fabric criss-crossing over the lace was distracting and just plain strange.

Melissa McCarthy Emmy's

The hilarious Melissa McCarthy of Mike and Molly and Bridesmaids, embraced her curves in a black, 3/4-sleeved gown. McCarthy was disappointed with the plus-size dresses available to her and decided to design her own gown with the help of Daniella Pearl. The result is subtle, intricate, and classy. Good for her for taking matters into her own hands.

Zosia Mamet Emmys Gown

Photo via VH1.

Zosia Mamet, of the HBO series Girls, just didn’t do it for me. Just like Glenn Close, Mamet wore a strange Bibhu Mohapatra number (see a pattern here?). The odd bust line, strange openings at the knees, and unflattering sleeves don’t work.

Hayden Panettiere Emmys Dress

Photo via Fashionado.

Hayden Panettiere’s Marchesa gown was perfectly asymmetrical and gave her the look of a Grecian goddess. The embroidered gold fabric, draped with dark blue tulle accentuated her petite frame. Love the sparkle!

Another star of HBO’s Girls illustrated couture gone wrong. Lena Dunham’s ill-fitting Prada gown is frumpy. The waistline sits all wrong and the black lace pattern makes her look much older than she is. Anyone who has seen the show, has seen her naked. Even the nude look would have been an improvement.

Kelly Osbourne Emmys

Over the years Kelly Osbourne has truly evolved in the style department. She went from a punk rock wild child to a style expert on E!’s Fashion Police. While her reportedly $250,000 black manicure topped with diamonds was the focus of much attention, I think the Zac Posen gown stole the show. Osbourne pulled off the lilac dress – which almost matches her hair – flawlessly. The fishtail hem and asymmetrical, one shoulder style fit her perfectly.

What did you think were the biggest red carpet hits and misses at the Emmy Awards? Do you gain design inspiration from the styles you love?
